Facts and Figures

Mastering the Metrics

$10.5 Trillion by 2025

Cybercrime is projected to cost the world $10.5 trillion annually by 2025, making it more profitable than the global trade of all major illegal drugs combined.

One Small Business is Hacked Every 39 Seconds

Small to mid-sized organizations—like many in Curry County—are particularly vulnerable. 43% of cyberattacks target small businesses, and many are not prepared to respond.

Average Cost of a Data Breach: $4.45 Million

The global average cost of a data breach reached $4.45 million in 2023, with recovery often taking months and impacting community services, customer trust, and local economies.

80 U.S. school districts

In 2023 alone, over 80 U.S. school districts were hit with ransomware, affecting more than 2,000 schools. Recovery costs often reach millions of dollars, diverting funds from education and student services.

Curry County Announces Cyber Security Summit

— Curry County is proud to host its first Cyber Security Summit on May 13-15, 2025, bringing together leaders from local government, special districts, and cybersecurity experts to address the increasing dangers posed by cyberattacks.

With special districts such as water, fire, health, education, and ports becoming prime targets for cybercriminals, the summit aims to equip leaders with knowledge and tools to safeguard critical infrastructure. Representatives from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will present on pressing cybersecurity challenges and practical solutions.

"The persistent threat to our local government by state-sponsored attackers has made it clear that no district is immune," said Phil Dickson, Chief Information Officer for Curry County, the key organizer of the summit.

"This event is about empowering our leaders with the tools to defend against these threats and ensure the safety of the services our communities rely on."

Highlights of the Summit

  • Sector-Specific Threat Discussions: Attendees will gain insights into real-world examples of cyber threats impacting sectors like water utilities, firefighting equipment, healthcare systems, and education institutions. From ransomware to equipment malfunctions, the risks are growing.

  • Expert Presentations: Topics will include access control, multi-factor authentication, network security, data backup and recovery, and incident response planning.

  • Hands-On Training: Participants will learn actionable strategies, such as identifying phishing attempts, implementing strong password policies, and monitoring for suspicious activity.

Cybersecurity is no longer a distant concern; it is a pressing issue that impacts every aspect of community life. Recent high-profile attacks, such as those on the American Water Utility, Seattle Public Library, and public K-12 schools, highlight the vulnerabilities even small, rural districts face.

"Cyber threats are not just a matter for urban areas—they affect all of us, from large utilities to local fire districts," added Dickson. "By coming together, we can build a stronger, more resilient future."

The summit will be held in Curry County and will also welcome leaders from Coos and Del Norte Counties. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with peers and experts, share best practices, and develop collaborative solutions.
